David Friswell's Minis

Postby worksminis » 18 Jul 2017, 22:56

This is the first thread covering "significant non-works competition Minis". Feel free to create further threads on individual cars or on drivers and their several Minis (eg. Tony Fall, Russell Brooks, Will Sparrow etc.). Please only truly significant competition cars, not the Mini of someone's mate next door.

632HAC (1071 S?) still owned by Friswell in early March 64.
957LOC? (1071 S) purchased from Alan/Sheila Taylor during March 64.
AXC596B (1275 S) Manx May 64 *brand new unmodified". MN Stocktonian Sep 64.
"BAC262B" recorded in use Mar 65. Actually BAK262B (photo Express and Star Rally Mar 65).
"New Hydro car Nov 65" (MN)
He did the (June) 64 Coupe des Alpes (French Alpine Rally) in AXC596B (Group One?).
He did the 68 Monte in an S (No.176, Dover starter). Was this the ex-works car LBL590E?
He did the 68 Tulip in an S (No.78). LBL590E? (He was in an Elan on the 66 and 67 Tulips, believed two different cars one hardtop one convertible)
He did the 68 Acropoilis in LBL590E. Seriously damaged.
He did the 69(?) Monte in a (Gp1?) S (a video exists of a local shakedown).

Illuminations Rally (MN Ch) Oct 69 in a 998 Cooper "his Alpine car". Lost exhaust because of low ride height.

EHA 555D This may be not common knowledge, but during 1968 and while in between engines it ran a slightly tuned 1100 engine on Amals carbs, plenty of torque, but a nightmare on cables and adjustment and they were never used again.

yes you are correct EHA555D was a dry suspension car.
and FWE 100J had no connection to David cars.

Thanks for that.
Recently saw a report of an MN Championship rally in November 65 where David Friswell is confirmed as being in a "new Hydrolastic S". This could not have been EHA555D (ie. too early for D reg) so we seem to have yet another car. He would have needed a Hydrolastic car for 1966 Internationals onwards as the dry car was not homologated in the new Appendix J from 1.1.66. (neither in Group 1, nor Gp2 until the very much later "option").

Presumably FWE100J was not a Friswell car?

EHA 555D was purchased by Andy Ayres of David Friswell from his Solihull Garage in 1968 it was a 1275 S in grey/white original colour , It was fitted with many works extras as David used it on the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally car number 29,sponcered by the works as a private entry, Andy went on to win the Three Spires Rally before selling it in 1969 Andy worked for Will Sparrow at his garage in Lapworth. where is this car now?

Another 1970 Competitive S was FWE 100J,Green/White, LHD,1390cc, all SC gears, LSD, built by Andy Ayres from a new body, many club wins before being sold in 1972, any body have photos, where is it now?

Not aware he does. Earlier post was to indicate he possibly had two cars at same time in Mar 64.

Thanks. There is a reference in "Memory Lanes - The Beginning" to him non-starting an MN event in 64 because he was "not back from the Alpine" but it was not clear whether that was AXC956B in both cases (given the significant number of different cars he seems to have had in a comparatively short period...).

Thanks for that ADO50 - and confirming 68 Monte car. That is the clip I was thinking of (it is a Group One car but not the 998 Group One he used on one International around 69/70).
I'll need to find the reference to him using a 998 Cooper (maybe on the Coupe des Alpes - it doesn't appear to have been the Monte or Tulip - and then on return entering an MN event and finding it too low a ride height.
