AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THIS FORUM - PLEASE READ

The Mini Cooper Forum was set up in 2016 with a view to providing a discussion and information platform for classic Mini Cooper and BMW MINI Cooper enthusiasts around the world. However discussion on anything to do with the Mini/MINI has always been welcomed.

As the forum banner says it is an independent forum with no affiliation to any car club or business. In terms of operation the forum has worked well with very few problems. However it’s fair to say that the forum has not been a success. Quite why remains something of a mystery. With this background in mind we hereby give notice that a final decision as to whether the Mini Cooper Forum continues to run or is taken down will be made on or just after 30th November 2019.

If you have ideas of how the forum might be improved to attract more discussion please feel free to either post on the forum or email admin@minicooperforum.org

11NYB 997 Cooper built by works in parallel with their first 997 Cooper 737ABL. 11NYB also red/black? Monte 62 with Rauno Aaltonen - crashed, burnt, destroyed.

170TYD 1071 S. Started 63 RAC Rally at No.1 with John Brown (61 winning co-driver). (Gp 3 car).
No. on car used on 65 Snetterton 500Km (new Gp 2 car?) running Minilites (first use by works of Minilites was on 67 Monte).

Mabbs had 11 NYB which was prepped at Abingdon, should have been ready for a couple of warm up events before the Monte of 62 but the prep was delayed with the workload at the comps. Oringally to be partnered by David Hiam, Turner put Aaltonen in with Mabbs and were on for a top three before the accident that destroyed NYB.

Later in 62 Mabbs got a new 997, 867 OYA and did quite a few nationals in it, autocross and the Monte and RAC. Replaced in the latter end of 63 with a 1071 170 TYD, and kept it for a few years, rallies including the RAC and the Tulip and RAC , ran with 970,1071,1275 engines, reshelled after a crash on the Tulip. Ended up as a racer prepared by Janspeed, Mabbs doing the 500km at Snetterton in it in 65. All Mabbs cars were red Austins.

and being claimed to be a works-built car quite recently in East Anglia - which is why it needed to be floated here for comment/disproving.

There was some interesting posts about this car 275 YYB on Facebook doubtful of the Geoff Mabbs and rally provenance. I would post a picture but I got told off last time I did that  so if you have not seen the car you can Google the registration number.

You will see it has a 1964 Rallye Monte plaque with number 159 on it but that plaque is from the entry of Richard Tilley/Frank Rutter in an Austin Cooper S registered 2772DW which was Smoke Grey. 275 YYB is Almond Green and is a Morris Cooper 998 from July 1964 so not really a Cooper S at all and of course could not have competed on the January 1964 Rallye Monte. Geoff Mabbs/Phillip Crabtree used a Ford Cortina on the 1964 Rallye Monte.

867 OYA

Postby ADO50 » 26 Jul 2017, 13:01

Geoff Mabbs (with Mike Wood) used an Austin Cooper registered 867 OYA on the 1963 Monte with competition number 28. I believe he also used 867 OYA on the 1962 RAC Rally.
